New Marijuana-like Drug K2 Hits Midwest
A new marijuana-like substance, called K2, Spice, Genie or Zohai, is showing up in headshops across the Midwest. Produced in China and Korea, K2 is a mixture of natural herbs and spices that is then sprayed with a chemical similar to THC, the active ingredient in marijuana. K2 is sold as incense, but users typically roll it like a cigarette or put in a water pipe to smoke.
K2 is illegal in much of Europe, but legal in the U.S. Possession of K2 is banned by the military. The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) has classified it as a "drug or chemical of concern." At this time, a number of states are considering outlawing it, although currently it is not illegal to sell or possess K2 in any state.
K2 is not regulated like other mood-altering drugs. Anyone can purchase it. Missouri and Kansas are considering legislation to make possession of K2 a felony or a misdemeanor, respectively. Texas is not considering legislation at this time.
The Effects of K2
K2 gives users a similar high to marijuana, though the high is said to be shorter-lived. Some people report becoming sick afterward. There is limited information available about the toxicity of K2 and no long-term studies regarding its side effects.
